The Iron Bulwark - Renegade Iron Warriors

In an alternate timeline, the Warmaster Horus did not succumb to the temptations of Chaos - rather, it was his brother Rogal Dorn who fell, leading to a tumultuous period where the distribution of power and loyalties were in disarray. This series of events culminated in the Dornian Heresy.

It is from this timeline that the band calling themselves the Iron Bulwark arose. During a freak warp storm, the Iron Blood and several accompanying battlecruisers were hurled through the fabric between dimensions and cast millenia forward in time, arriving through a hole in unreality in the closing years of the 41st millenium, in a galaxy where it was not Dorn who betrayed the Emperor of Mankind, but Horus.

Initial contact with the forces of both Chaos and the Imperium highlighted to Perturabo that this was not the same universe that they were familiar with. Conflicts arose with both sides, and to protect themselves from persecution by the Ordo Hereticus or other branches of the Ecclesiarchy and Inquisition, they took the name The Iron Bulwark - guardians of the secrets of the rifts between universes.

The hole in space remained, the writhing maw of unreality threatening to swallow anyone who drew too close. As masters of siegecraft, they surrounded this temporal wound in steel, encasing it safely within a massive artificial moon bristling with armaments and fortifications. Dubbed the Blackstar, the fortress was created by cannibalising the Iron Blood and several unlucky nearby worlds.

Their true name and nature hidden, the Iron Bulwark were taciturn to the extreme, and purges battlefields of any witnesses to protect their origins and maintain the secrecy of the Blackstar. This has led to the (very rare) survivors of both sides being hunted down with extreme prejudice.

However, the galaxy is a vast place, and whispers of the Bulwark have reached leaders on both sides. Loyalists tell of a brutal and unflinching wall of blackened silver warriors cutting down Imperial citizens and soldiers without mercy - oddly untainted astartes in the livery of the Iron Warriors; traitors speak of what seems to be loyalist elements of the IVth.

Little do they know that both speak of the same group.

The Iron Bulwark remain cold and uncompromising in their defense of the Blackstar from all sides - after all, the fate of not one, but two universes hangs in the balance.
