Argent Praetors

The Argent Praetors are an Ultima Founding chapter tasked with patrolling the Cicatrix Maledictum, and maintaining vigil around the few safe corridors through it.

As with many of the chapters formed in the wake of the Indomitus Crusade, the Praetors' parentage is unknown to the wider Imperium. Within the ranks of the Praetors, the majority of the battle brothers believe they are sons of Guilliman. Whilst this is true for a large portion of the chapter, the truth is somewhat more complex.

Echoing the Deathwatch's approach to melding the strengths of each of the founding legions, the Praetors maintain an elite first company drawn from several different founding legions, giving them more flexibility in their approach to combat - something incredibly important in a position as tumultuous as theirs.

Jaeger Squads

The chapter utilises an unusually large number of rapid insertion squads, colloquially referred to as Jaeger squads. Each of these Jaeger squads specialises in a different aspect of warfare. Each Praetor tends to lean more towards one of these facets, to the extent that each is generally associated with a lodge.

Over time, five major warrior lodges have been formed from these Jaeger squads:

The Falcon

Warriors of the Falcon lodge epitomise speed and power above all else. Warriors from the Falcon lodge often utilise jump packs or bikes to outflank their enemies, believing that the best defense is a good offense.

Praetor-Orator Ferros Vox, the Master of Sanctity for the Praetors is the primary sponsor for the Falcon lodge, his preference for rapid engagement and brutal efficiency coming through in his recitations as he inspires his battle-brothers to greater feats of speed and valour.

The Fox

Warriors of the Fox lodge value tactical flexibility. Often utilising intercessor equipment and the now eponymous bolt rifle, these individuals strike a balance between firepower and adaptability.

Praetor Valdrak was the sponsor for the Fox lodge until he was brought down in combat with the traitor legions. His successor has not yet been appointed.

The Wolf

Warriors of the Wolf lodge believe in the dogged pursuit of the enemy, and are generally expert trackers and marksmen. Many of these warriors make use of plasma incinerators and stalker-pattern bolt rifles, or make excellent use of phobos-pattern armour for stealth.

Praetor Axmund Torbsson, captain of the first reserve company is the sponsor of the Wolf lodge.

The Lion

Warriors of the Lion lodge eschew ranged weaponry in favour of the glorious melee of hand-to-hand combat. A large portion of the Praetors' first company hail from the ranks of the White Scars and their successors, leading to a vicious hammer to complement the anvils of the Wolf and Wyvern lodges.

The Praetor of the Lion lodge is currently Sar'Korro "Little Khan", so nicknamed for his striking resemblance to the White Scars' 3rd captain.

The Wyvern

Warriors of the Wyvern lodge serve as the bulwark of the praetors, clad primarily in durable gravis armour. They often work with warriors of the Wolf and Lion lodges as a vanguard force or a patient ambush force. They have a proclivity for flame and melta weaponry.

The Praetor of the Ox Lodge is Andornius Foehammer, who wears the skin of a Nocturnean drake he helped to take down as a neophyte.

There are other, lesser lodges amongst the battle brothers of the Argent Praetors, but generally these are seconded to one of the major lodges.

Chapter Master Greis Jagdhund

Greis Jagdhund is a veteran of the first company of the Ultramarines, one of the first to go through the Rubicon Primaris. Still bearing traces of Ultramarine livery upon his relic armour, he leads the assembled lodges from the vanguard. Whilst his personal approach to combat tends to eschew the longer-ranged weaponry of the Wolf lodge, he well knows the benefits of a balanced strike force, and draws his lieutenants and captains equally from the ranks of each lodge.
